Note from the alumni:

I wanted to share with you how I spent my education award, since I feel lucky to have found the option and it was hard to find, plus I think it could be an attractive option to the graduates of your program.

I took two intensive courses at Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Vermont. Yestermorrow teaches builders how to design, designers how to build, and beginners how to do it all. The focus is always on natural and green building, and they offer so many exciting short intensive courses for people who aren't looking to commit to much. The school does not show up on the register, but a student can take their classes through Sterling College and apply their education award.

In my timber framing course I learned the ancient craft of home building with chisels, and in my Natural Building Certificate course I spent five weeks learning how to build with straw, clay, lime, sand, and other natural elements of the earth. Now back in Pittsburgh, I've just built my first straw bale chicken coop with a sod roof for a client!

Had I known this all sooner, I'd have been in Vermont 8 years ago after my first term with Americorps.

As always, please let us know if there are resources you would like to get out to other alumni!
